Abstrakt

The preceding pages have discussed the history of cinema in Europe from an economic and political point of view, stressing the importance national governments of all political persuasions came to attach to controlling and supporting what was, for much of the twentieth century, the most important audio-visual medium and the most significant form of mass entertainment. The Russian Revolution, the rise of fascism in Italy, Germany and Spain, the two world wars, the collapse of the Soviet Union, together with the creation and extension of the European Union, have all been seen to have had a profound impact on the cinema and to have affected the film industries in Europe.
