Are mental characteristics or their disorders inherited? An increasing body of data on adoptees, twins, and families argues convincingly that genetic effects are important in the transmission of neurophysiological variables, psychiatric illness, and personality traits. The pertinent question for neuroscientists has become: What is inherited, and through what kinds of mechanisms do genetic and experiential factors interact in the central nervous system?
