The idea of cognitive maps and the use of cognitive maps to illustrate psychological structures and processes have come into psychology around the issues of: How do we represent geographical space to ourselves? How do we form an effective image of our environment such that we can feel at home in a region and find our way around? The notion of "cognitive" maps is used here with the awareness that many (most) of these maps also chart territories that are transcognitive, "beyond" the realm of cognitive thought processes.
