Abstract

Lloyd Geering is best known for having been tried for heresy by the Presbyterian Church in his home country of New Zealand. Nevertheless, Geering has had a career that has spanned more than five decades. This chapter begins by examining Geering's life and thought in a series of approaches, following the various aspects of what would be called "the Geering controversy." This is important because as an antipodean figure and thinker, Geering's rise to international prominence needs to be understood within a wider frame of New Zealand society and also within the world of the self-radicalizing modern. This chapter gives overviews of each stage of development of Geering's thought.
