The theme of this paper takes me further than others at this Conference along the line of underinterpretation of language. Yet just this theoretical economy appears to open a route for both experimental and computational psycholinguistics to begin to create manageable explanations of the dauntingly complex phenomena of language, plausibly at least in early speech comprehension and production, but conceivably even in adult language also.
