Abstract

Tofighian's analysis of the Phaedo considers the thematic and philosophical significance of the underworld myth and its structural role in the text. He identifies the myth's relationship to the plot, character selection, symbolism, and the arrangement and style of the different arguments. Tofighian engages with Lévi-Strauss's theory of binary systems in relation to myth and argues that the closing narrative contrasts philosophical and religious categories to produce meaning. He analyzes three significant literary features represented in the myth's plot and themes: dualism, deliverance, and a peculiar Pythagorean/Platonic distinction. These features help regulate both narrative and arguments. Tofighian's interpretation of the Phaedo illustrates how Plato addresses a particular audience through his choice of plot, characters, and symbolism. And a sense of devotion and sanctity pervades the mythic and philosophical sections.
