Abstract

Biology offers simple examples of self-organisation, and we use it to illustrate the key concept of bifurcation or branching. The tree shown in Fig. 1 develops branches on a yearly basis. Each branch can grow a new one (drawn to the right and numbered) after it has existed for two years.
