Language and logic are inseparably intertwined in the European intellectual tradition. It has not always been an easy relationship. There have always been issues of substance whether the two were friends or foes. Today computation is part of the equation, and we are seeing the development of a new discipline of computational linguistics. But meaning in language is more than combinatorial properties of signs. We note some limitations of the current technology and put forward some observations on the broader topic of grammar and logic.
