Abstract

Eastern Europe is currently undergoing a phase of transition. This is possibly the only statement concerning the area upon which all researchers would readily agree. The issue of transition from what and, even more, to what, is a moot point. It is most commonly pointed out that these changes signify a transition from communist dictatorship to democracy. However the experiences of respective countries are quite diverse and in some cases serious doubts as to whether the changes will lead to democracy could be substantiated.
