Scholarly journals have existed for several centuries and have, in many important respects, remained remarkably unchanged throughout their long history. They exist to allow scholars to communicate their findings and ideas; they are based on the principle of peer review; and they come in the form of collected papers bound together in issues and volumes published periodically.
