During the past 10 years treatment of phantom and stump pain has experienced a tremendous revival through the introduction of dorsal column stimulation (DCS), transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TNS), and percutaneous nerve stimulation (PNS). Certainly, the gate control theory of Melzack and Wall [1] has played an important role in developing these procedures for pain inhibition in the CNS.
