Abstrakt

Being neither cosmologist nor theologian nor historian, I may be the complete expert generalist for this conference. I had better initiate my remarks with a bit of a confession—which I take to be acceptable for this audience and our readers. I was a physicist and continued my work as a philosopher. I add that I am a Jewish atheist, which should set the context of my remarks as clearly as those of our colleagues who spoke from their religious positions. My being a Jewish atheist may raise a question, since I do mean I am a Jew and not merely by origin. Is to be a Jew inconsistent as a religious tradition with being an atheist? Not so, as we shall see. Now these autobiographical remarks are relevant, so let me go on a little more.
