Abstract

The human brain is three times larger than that of our australopithecine ancestors and our closest living relatives. The pressures that drove the evolution of the hominid brain are debated and include climatic, ecological, and social factors. The thread that ties these models together is the ability to anticipate and cope with novelty and change. Geary presents a model of the evolution of mental models for coping with change and integrates this with cognitive and neuroscience research.
