Abstract

The questions what does the truth of a belief consist in and how can we recognise that it is true, have given rise not only to various theories of truth but also to various phińośophies. For as soon as the question of truth is raised, a whole intricate complex of issues appears in its wake and the examination of the concept of truth is transformed into a dispute between rival philosophical theories. Some of the most influential modern philosophical doctrines, for instance, the instrumentalist philosophy of Dewey or logical empiricism, have the criticism of the traditional concept of truth as their starting point.
