Abstract

The discussion of Tintoretto's L"Adultera in Chapter 2 of Fontane's novel foregrounds the theme of woman as object of the "male gaze". This reveals Fontane's awareness of the tensions inherent in the relationship between object and beholder in early modernist art and an understanding of the way this corresponds to the supervisory mechanisms of the "disciplinary society".Die Diskussion von Tintorettos L"Adultera im 2. Kapitel von Fontanes Roman hebt die Thematik der Frau als Gegenstand des männlichen Blicks hervor. Dies belegt Fontanes Einsicht sowohl in die Problematik des Betrachtens in der Malerei der frühen Moderne als auch deren Beziehung zum Überwachungsapparat der "disziplinären Gesellschaft".
