Remembering Yves Delage means reflecting on the relations between science and ideology and retracing a period when experimental embryology put biology in a different light. By his scientific work and the results of his experimental studies, by his efforts to spread biological knowledge and by his teaching, Delage contributed to scientific progress and to establishing the new biology of the years 1890–1910. In embryology, Delage became prominent by his work on merogony and parthenogenesis, which was designed to provide insights into fécondation,1 the processes initiating individual life.
