Abstract

The embryological work of Laurent Chabry (1855–1893) consists of his doctoral thesis, Embryologie normale et tératologique des Ascidies simples (1887, see next page), supplemented by some research on the sea urchin egg (1886–1889). At the laboratoire de zoologie maritime of Concarneau and in parallel with his work on animal mechanics (see Fischer 1992), in 1884 Chabry started a series of investigations on mécanique cellulaire. To allow him to observe the egg of Ascidia aspersa, he invented the capillaire porte-objet, to which he then added a perforateur for his experiments (see next Essay). His technical experience, backed up by his exceptional abilities, permitted him to elucidate developmental facts with the aid of appropriate instrumentation.
